American and Synthetic - I love the 587 and have been wearing them for several years. They have great control of foot roll and are designed for the "Clydesdale" runner. It is one of the only shoes for me with my height of 6'6" and being over 300 lbs. I also love the fact that they are made in the USA and are leather free. There are other options from NB, but they cost more so in the ratio of cost vs. usability, this one is tops!
